Ennis (31-0, 28 KOs) returns home for a mandatory defense of his IBF belt against Crowley (22-0, 9 KOs). This is his first title defense, which came after previous champion Terence Crawford decided not to defend against him.

The idea behind Ennis' promoter Eddie Hearn bringing him home for this fight is that the fight isn't big enough to sell in Las Vegas or New York because Canadian Crowley isn't a big name fighter in the US.

Boots Ennis' hometown of Philadelphia is the only place where a fight between him and the little-known 31-year-old Crowley could be sold. Hearn said tickets are selling quickly and he expects them to sell out well before the July 13 deadline.

Ennis Crowley's Warning

“Keep talking and he'll get the worst beating of his life. I promise you that. We can make a bet or something like that. Look, I’m glad you took the fight,” Jaron “Boots” Ennis said while talking to his opponent Cody Crowley during today’s press conference for the opening of their July 13 fight in Philadelphia.

If all goes well for Boots, he could face WBC champion Mario Barrios in his next unification bout. Boots needs to beat Crowley and look good on July 13th. Hearn believes he can convince Barrios or WBA champion Eimants Stanionis to agree to fight him if the money is right.

“Jaron Ennis is a star. I like this guy, Cody Crowley. He's 22-0. He won't be good enough tonight, but he will succeed.” Promoter Hearn asked the media about “Boots” Ennis vs. Crowley.

“He (Ennis) has to win these titles at 147 pounds, and then he has to go and fight Terence Crawford if Crawford can beat Madrimov. Every day I still think to myself, “Madrimov is going to beat Terence Crawford on August 3rd in Los Angeles.”

It’s too early for Hearn to talk about organizing a fight between Boots Ennis and Terence Crawford. Ennis still needs to beat Crowley and defeat Barrios and Stanionis. Crawford has Madrimov and someone else after that.

“There are people at 147 who will look to Boots as a source of payroll. Barrios and Stanionis. What other battles will they participate in? They'll have to look for a Boots fight for me to pay, or a site fee to pay, or somewhere else to pay, to give them a paycheck,” Hearn said.
