The American took to Twitter to thank angry fans after his two-hour and 43-minute triumph, saying: “Shout out to the fans behind me for talking inappropriately about my girlfriend, family and team for 2.5 hours. Thanks for the extra motivation – still love you all!”

Korda, ranked 27th, picked up his first career win in Rome in his third appearance and will face Taylor Fritz in the third round.

Fritz defeated another Italian, Fabio Fognini, 6-3, 6-4.

American Ben Shelton also advanced to the third round on Friday, beating Pavel Kotov 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Marcos Giron (vs. Rublev) and Tommy Paul (vs. Karatsev) will play second-round matches on Saturday as the Americans attempt to reach the round of 16 at the Foro Italico.
