Why Canelo Alvarez is unlikely to fight Terence Crawford: Eddie Hearn's view – Boxing News 24

Promoter Eddie Hearn says he doesn't think Canelo Alvarez is interested in fighting Terence Crawford because he has nothing to gain from the fight.

Hearn argues that undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo (61-2-2, 39 KOs) will not receive any recognition if he defeats Crawford because the Nebraska native will move up from 147 to 168. He will be much bigger than Crawford. (40-0, 31 KOs), who started his career at 135 pounds and never fought at 154, 160 or 168.

Hearn believes Canelo has no interest in chasing a fighter like Crawford around the ring all night, as he did against Jermell Charlo last September. He says Canelo was enjoying his last title defense against Jermell Charlo when he arrived for the fight and wanted to mix things up.

Size difference is key

Hearn believes Canelo could choose WBA mandatory titleholder Edgar Berlanga to next defend his title in September. Crawford still has a tough fight against WBA junior middleweight champion Israil Madrimov, which he should win, and Hearn is suspected of losing that fight on August 3.

“I don’t speak on behalf of Canelo because I don’t represent his interests. I don't think he's too interested in fighting Terence Crawford because I think he'll think, “I'm not going to get any credit for the fight.” beat Terence Crawford,” Eddie Hearn told the press, speaking of his belief that Canelo Alvarez is not interested in fighting Terence Crawford.

“He’s a 147-pounder who just moved up to 154 pounds. You're asking him to move up to 168 pounds and fight a guy (Canelo) who is significantly bigger than him. Also, at this point in Canelo Alvarez's career, stylistically, I'm not sure he wants to fight a striker (Crawford) that he has to chase around the ring.

Canelo's lack of interest in Crawford's fighting style

“That’s what happened when he fought Charlo. I don't think he liked this fight. I think he liked the Munguia fight because he was a young, big super middleweight who was looking to win. I think he would have just as much fun fighting Edgar Berlanga, but money talks.

“The one thing about Saul Alvarez is that he is all about money, and what I like about him is that he doesn’t try to hide it. He has the belts, he has the legacy. The only thing left to do is to fight in fights that motivate him and bring him money,” Hearn said.
