Kambosos on the precipice: today's fight is decisive – Boxing News – 24

George Kambosos Jr. will score a must win tonight against top-ranked Vasiliy Lomachenko for the vacant IBF lightweight title in Perth, Australia.

Kambosos Jr. (21-2, 10 KOs) hasn't looked good in any of his last three fights since his big 2021 win over Teofimo Lopez. Things have gone downhill for Kambosos since then, and tonight's meeting with Lomachenko at the RAC Arena on ESPN doesn't look good for him.

Kambosos: Shooting Star

  • Record: 21-2, 10 KOs (but those two losses were actually brutal).
Recent results: shaky at best, downright terrible at worst.
Claim to fame: fluke win over Teofimo Lopez in 2021

Highest Rank: Lifeline that can be cut

If Kambosos loses to Loma, his opportunities to fight in championship level fights for good paydays could disappear entirely, leaving a guy who is being used as a test horse for newbies.

Former unified lightweight champion Kambosos probably shouldn't have gotten the opportunity to fight for the IBF title, but signing with Top Rank helped. Without them, Kambosos would be nothing, fighting for peanuts against lower-ranking fighters and probably losing anyway.

There's no getting around how bad Kambosos looked and his promoters won't be able to save him if he looks as bad tonight as he did recently. I think Top Rank will drop Kambosos for fish if Lomachenko beats him.

The guy can't be protected because he's shown he can't beat anyone in the top ten. Top Rank won't want to spend money on Kambosos if he can't beat anyone.

Expert opinion

“Kambosos, he fights good and bad fights. More bad money than good money,” boxing expert Chris Algieri told YouTube channel Probox TV about tonight’s fight between George Kambosos Jr. and Vasiliy Lomachenko.

“He's trying to maintain his level as a guy who can make a lot of money fighting the top elite class at the championship level. So, for him this is a defeat, it will be very difficult for him to get any championship level and elite fights after the defeat.

“The win gives him a huge opportunity to fight other champions in this weight class or move up to 140 pounds and fight Teofimo and get another rematch there against a guy he beat once,” Algieri said.
