Monfils to Humbert: “You have to accept the fact that you play very well on clay”

Gaël Monfils, Jérémy Chardy and Ugo Humbert chatting over a good meal at a restaurant, this is what the UTS offers us in the sixth episode of its “All on the table” format. If the full video will be released next Wednesday, we were treated to a first excerpt which was released on social networks this Saturday.

Former French number one, Gaël Monfils brings all his experience and his point of view to the current Habs number one Ugo Humbert. For “La Monf”, his young compatriot, coached by Jérémy Chardy, must accept the fact that he plays well on clay, even if it is a surface that he appreciates less than hard or grass.

“You need to accept more quickly the fact that you play well on clay,” Monfils explains to Humbert. “Sometimes I see what you say and I think you have to be honest with yourself, you play well on clay. It’s a surface that you like less but you know how to perform on it.”

Humbert had pushed Ruud to play three sets in Monte-Carlo

Ugo Humbert, 15th in the world, has only one victory in six appearances at the Roland-Garros tournament. But since last year, the Frenchman has had good results on clay. He notably won two Challengers 175 in 2023 (Cagliari and Bordeaux) and reached the quarter-finals of the Masters 1000 in Monte-Carlo in 2024 by pushing Casper Ruud in the third set before finally losing.

“Not many players would win two 175s and not many players would play three sets against Casper Ruud, finalist in Monte-Carlo and winner in Barcelona” continues Gaël Monfils. “So yes you don’t like clay but you know how to perform.”

“Over the years, I am now in the same situation as you. When I was younger I loved clay but now it's the surface I hate the most. It’s more physical for me.” Gaël Monfils has in fact won only two matches in three tournaments on clay in 2024, before arriving at Roland-Garros.
