Box Office : A Madea Family Funeral Movie Nabs Boffo $27M

A Madea Family Funeral may not have topped the box office this weekend, but it is an unqualified winner. The ninth (and allegedly final) Madea comedy earned a strong $27.05 million over its debut weekend. That’s a robust 2.94x weekend multiplier and one of Tyler Perry’s biggest debuts in his 14-year/20-movie career.

Among Tyler Perry flicks, it sits behind only Boo! A Madea Halloween ($28 million in 2016), Why Did I Get Married Too? ($29m in 2010), A Madea Family Reunion ($30m in 2006) and Madea Goes to Jail ($41m in 2009). This is a solid curtain call for an iconic big-screen character.

Fans showed up for A Madea Family Funeral because they wanted to see Madea. To the extent that audiences now see movies in a theater mostly if they like the leading character (be it Wonder Woman or Freddie Mercury) and to the extent that anything can be an event movie if it qualifies as a big deal to a specific demographic (think Crazy Rich Asians or Girls Trip), Tyler Perry can arguably be credited with pioneering the modern event movie. Again and again, with or without Madea, Perry’s melodramas pulled in big numbers from moviegoers who wanted what he was selling, even as the rest of Hollywood pretended to be shocked.

For the last 14 years, Perry’s nine Madea adventures have generally opened with between $21 million and $25m and ended up with between $50m and $65m. There were some breakouts here and there. Boo! A Madea Halloween took advantage of a Halloween season lacking in conventional scare flicks and opened with $28m before legging it to $73m domestic while A Madea Family Reunion (his second film and the first that he directed) opened with $30m in 2006 a year after Diary of a Mad Black Woman shocked us all in 2005 with a $22m launch and $50m cume. Madea Goes to Jail opened with a sky-high $40m in early 2009 (a season where frankly everything popped) and ended up with $90m domestic.

Inflation notwithstanding, the fans have continued to show up right until the end.  That’s doubly impressive when you consider that we have at least a little bit more onscreen diversity than we did in 2005. As noted many times over the years, Tyler Perry came along at just the “right” time, just as the DVD crash and Hollywood’s tentpole obsession turned the likes of The Best Man and Waiting to Exhale into endangered species.
