For the second time this year, Elena Rybakina refused to participate in a Masters 1000 level tournament due to illness and did so as the defending champion!

The women have only had four tournaments, and Rybakina has dropped out of half the tournaments: Indian Wells and now the Rome Masters, which she won last year.

“I'm disappointed to have to leave Rome this year, but unfortunately I don't feel well enough to compete. I have such good memories of last year and I was looking forward to defending my title,” she said.

“Rome is special for me and I’m looking forward to coming back next year to reclaim the title and play in front of the Italian fans.”

Earlier today Rybakina was supposed to meet with Irina-Camelia Begu. She will now head to the French Open, where she will be among the 4-5 favorites, provided she is healthy. Last year she also failed to finish in French!
