Undisputed lightweight champion Islam Makhachev claims he has “something special” planned for his title return at UFC 302 against former interim titleholder Dustin Poirier next month, vowing to finish off challenger Lafayette.

Makhachev, the reigning undisputed lightweight champion and the current number one ranked pound-for-pound fighter under the organization's banner, is scheduled to return to New Jersey next month, headlining against Poirier at UFC 302.

Sitting on the sidelines since October last year, Russian star Makhachev landed a one-sided first-round kick to score a knockout victory over two-fight rival Alexander Volkanovski, handing the former featherweight champion his first knockout loss as a pro.

“Every time he (Dustin Poirier) fights the champion, someone chokes him,” Islam Makhachev said. Good Guy/Bad Guy. “Now I need to cook something special. And we did it in the gym. I have something special for the next fight.”

Admittedly weighing his own fighting future ahead of his UFC 302 return, Poirier, the former interim gold winner, said he could potentially hang up the gloves even if he beats Makhachev as he enters the fight as the odds-on underdog.

As for his immediate plans following his title defense, Makhachev said he will seek a move up to welterweight after the Poirier fight as he continues to demand a title shot against current goldholder Leon Edwards.
