Cavan Biggio: one of the best draft picks of current management – Passion MLB

In the last few days, the Blue Jays chose to designate left-hander Cavan Biggio for assignment. By necessity, this marked the end of an era in Toronto.

And this, even if he was no longer moving forward.

All that to say that it got people talking and that many angles were found to measure the impact that Cavan Biggio had during his career in Toronto. And one of the most interesting comes from Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith.

He analyzed the current administration's draft picks (like Alex Anthopoulos left after the 2015 season, Ross Atkins and Mark Shapiro drafted in the Queen City for the first time in 2016) and their contribution to the Blue Jays .

This obviously does not include players acquired by trade, via the free agency market or via international signings of prospects who, like Vladimir Guerrero Jr., are not eligible for the draft.

And the bottom line is that Biggio is one of the most productive players drafted by current management.

When we take the WAR, or the number of wins generated more than a normal player, we see that only four players drafted by Atkins and Shapiro have a WAR of more than 2.0. It's REALLY not much, but hey.

Which? Here they are :

  • WAR of 17.7: Bo Bichette (2016)
  • WAR of 7.4: Alek Manoah (2019)
  • WAR of 7.4: Cavan Biggio (2016)
  • WAR of 2.7: Davis Schneider (2017)

His longevity allowed him to achieve such a score, but 5.0 of his 7.4 points were obtained in 2019 (3.0) and 2020 (2.0), which was a shortened season. He was less and less useful for the club for four years.

To me, that says more about how the Blue Jays are drafting, but oh well.
