MLB: The Chicago Cubs reportedly contacted the Blue Jays about Vladimir Guerrero Jr. | RDS

The Chicago Cubs have “privately discussed” with the Toronto Blue Jays the possibility of acquiring All-Star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. if the Jays make him available this summer according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Nightengale wrote Sunday that if the Jays don't turn around their season and fail to extend the contracts of Guerrero and shortstop Bo Bichette, their rivals might think Toronto would be willing to trade them.

But last week, that wasn't the case yet. Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins told MLB Network last Sunday that a trade involving any of his star players would not make sense for his team.

“It just doesn’t make sense to us.” There will be times when you're talking with other leaders where they'll ask if you're considering doing this, but we're just saying it's not something we've spent time on,” Atkins said.

“But because they are so talented and such good teammates, they are attractive to other teams. Then they will call. I was disappointed to see that this was something another leader had commented about our team. But that's simply not the case. »

Atkins added that the goal remains to agree on contract extensions for both players and that a dialogue remains ongoing. Both players will be free as the air at the end of this campaign.

“On the extension, of course. We are in dialogue with them and this will continue. We believe in them, we believe in their future and hope they can play here for a long time. »

Guerrero bounced back from a slow start to the season with seven home runs and 30 RBIs in 64 games. Bichette has four and 27 in 61 games.

Toronto has a 31-33 record, 13 games behind the New York Yankees, leaders of the American East division. Despite the disappointing start to the season, the Jays are only two games out of last place among drafted teams in the American League.
