“We are going to launch investments in tennis”, assures the mayor of Châteauroux Gil Avérous

Like every year since he became mayor of Châteauroux Métropole in 2014, Gil Avérous is invited by the French tennis federation to spend a day at Roland-Garros. This year, it was Monday June 3, the opportunity for him to attend beautiful posters, but also to discuss with the elected representatives of committee 36, the Center – Val de Loire league and the FFT, the investments that it intends to implement in the Castelroussine conurbation.

Is tennis a passion, a sport that you practice?

” No way. On the other hand, I really like it and it is always with great pleasure that I have been going to Roland-Garros for ten years. I am impressed by the quantity of spectators (75,000 people on the entire site on busy days) by the quality of the welcome and by the supervision. We are truly in one of the largest sports organizations in France. »

In terms of sport, what impresses you the most?

“My favorite player is Nadal. Well, unfortunately, this year, it was eliminated before I arrived (on 1er round, beaten by Alexander Zverev). Everything about him impresses me: his physical strength, his determination, his efficiency. This year, I enjoyed Djokovic's round of 16 against Cerúndolo. He was behind, but I remained convinced that he was going to win because this guy fights until the end. Moreover, he won in five sets, even if I learned that he had withdrawn from the next round. »

No chance that we will see players of this talent one day at Châteauroux?

“No, it’s impossible (smile). But we are positioning ourselves to organize major national and even international beach tennis competitions. We have the equipment, they are covered, and our central position in the region is an additional advantage. A technical manager from the FFT will soon visit our facilities. It could be done in 2025.”

More generally, tennis equipment deserves to be refreshed…

” I agree. They are really getting old. Whether at CTC 36, the Indre committee or the ASPTT Châteauroux, we need facilities better adapted to our times. We are also listening to CTC 36 who would like the construction of padel courts. We will meet the clubs very soon to begin a consultation and see how we could articulate a multi-year investment plan (PPI) until 2028.”
