Golf. Tournament winner, Scottie Scheffler “close to disaster” at Memorial

American world number one Scottie Scheffler held on until the end to win a one-stroke victory on Sunday June 9 at the Memorial tournament, counting for the PGA Tour and played in Ohio, after a tense duel in the last round with his compatriot Collin Morikawa.

Scheffler shot a final 74 at Muirfield Village to finish at eight under par, giving him a morale-boosting victory before heading into next week's US Open at Pinehurst, SC. North.

Despite a final round strewn with errors, with three bogeys and a single birdie, Scheffler's imperturbable temperament proved decisive. “It’s pretty incredible,” declared the two-time Masters winner after his victory.

“A difficult place to conclude”

“I feel like I came close to disaster in this tournament. It's a tough place to conclude, as you've seen today. The course was so complicated to play,” pointed out the 27-year-old golfer.

Scheffler was congratulated by tournament host legend Jack Nicklaus as he left the 18th green after a victory that earned him a whopping $4 million (€3.7 million).
