On November 21, the Maksimir Arena in Zagreb will host the match of the 10th round of qualification for Euro 2024, in which the Croatian team will meet with the Armenian team. The match will begin at 21:45 Kyiv time.
The Croatian team reached medals at the two previous world championships. In 2018, a national record was set – Croatia reached the final. In Qatar 2022, the Croats took bronze with an updated squad. In the summer, they lost in a penalty shootout in the decisive match of the Nations League. It seemed that Modric and company would qualify for Euro 2024 without any problems.
Things went well until September. In four matches, 10 points were taken: losing the victory over Wales at home, then the checkered ones won three times. But in October, the favorite first lost at home 0:1 to Turkey, after which it lost 1:2 to the Welsh, which is why it fell behind a couple of rivals. But in the last round they managed to beat Latvia 2:0, scoring both goals in the first quarter of an hour. And the opponents from Wales just misfired in the game with Armenia.
The Armenian national team performed poorly last year, finishing 4th in its group. As a result, the experienced Spaniard Joaquin Caparros was replaced as head coach by Alexander Petrakov. In 2022, he led the Ukrainian national team and beat his current players. With the new coach, the Armenians produced several good results – they beat Wales on the road, almost won in Turkey – where their principle rival equalized the score in the 88th minute.
But in October, the Armenians unexpectedly lost to an obvious outsider – Latvia, after which they de facto lost their chance to qualify for the Euro. But at the same time they managed to trip up Wales (1:1) when Tiknizyan scored an own goal. The Armenians should be incredibly grateful to Luka Modric and company for this result.
Statistics of personal meetings
Before the current cycle and the September victory of Croatia in it (1:0), a friendly match was played the year before last (1:1).
Bookmakers are confident that the Croats will not repeat the mistake of the Welsh – we bet that the hosts will win with a -1.5 goal handicap (odds – 1.75).
