Ronald Koeman, coach of the Netherlands national team: “We didn’t start very well. But we scored a great goal. We should have scored the second and third goals to feel more comfortable for the rest of the match.
I’m sorry we didn’t score more goals because we created a lot of good chances. Our offensive play wasn’t the best part of our game. With the score 1-0, Ireland were keen to get a draw. But we defended very well until the end of the game.
Qualifying campaign? The Ireland game was really important, as was the away game against Greece. There was a lot of pressure on the players and the team, but we withstood it. We did our job, we won.”
Cody Gakpo, Netherlands forward: “In the end, it’s about winning. We knew we needed three points to qualify today, at home with our fans. We created a lot of chances, opportunities, but we need to score more goals and show more zeal in the final third of the field.
Qualifying campaign? There were really important matches away against Greece and Ireland. It may not have been our best performances, but we achieved victories there – and that’s all that matters.
We have very good players on the field and on the bench. We’ve had a lot of injuries, so imagine the quality we have when everyone is fit. There is good hope for the future. I hope everyone will be in shape by the start of the tournament.”
Matt Doherty, captain of the Irish national team: “We showed a good game, just like the first time. Obviously the opposition created a lot of chances in the second half, but Gavin Bazunu was excellent. You’ll need this when you’re traveling to big away arenas like this one. You need your goalkeeper to play well, you need defensive tackles.
Qualifying campaign? Overall it was a clear disappointment, but I think we only let ourselves down twice: both times against Greece. “If you can play well against France at home and lose 0-1 and their goalkeeper makes an incredible last-second save… The Netherlands could have a two or three goal lead in the first 15 minutes.”
