“The UEFA President kept his word, but who will protect our interests?”

Famous Ukrainian journalist Roman Bebekh commented on the scandalous episode at the end of the Euro 2024 qualifying match between Ukraine and Italy (0:0), in which the referees did not award a penalty after a foul on Mudryk.

“If you watched the match, then no one has any doubts about this episode. Mudryk plays the ball, Cristante hits him in the foot. If they give a penalty, we have a 100% chance to score and advance towards the Euro.

But this is not being done, there is a VAR system at the game, all this should be checked, but for some reason this is not being done either. We probably need to talk about how this system works, what manipulation of the result is. It is clear that all this is against the backdrop of the words of UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin the day before, a month ago. He said Italy should be at the European Championships. Quietly, calmly, the moment was simply missed, as if it had not happened. The referees just didn’t look and didn’t say anything to the boss. That’s it, let’s play and goodbye.

And if something like this had happened in our direction, then I am convinced that it would have been different.

It was a shame that we could have delayed this game. This penalty was given, it was a pure penalty, an honest penalty. We don’t say: “Give us some small turd.”

The UEFA President kept his word, but what are we going to do? Who will protect our interests? Andrei Shevchenko was also at the stadium. Perhaps Andrei Nikolaevich will also join in. But it’s all over, drink some water and know that you have to be stronger when the UEFA president, the referees and everyone else are against you,” the journalist said.

Note that failure to win in Italy means that the Ukrainian team took third place in the group and was unable to directly qualify for the 2024 European Championship. Sergei Rebrov’s team has a chance to qualify for the tournament through the Nations League playoffs, which will take place next spring.
