Edgar Berlanga continued his work today as he tries to secure a fight against Canelo Alvarez in September.
Why are fans angry?
On Instagram, Berlanga posted a video of himself singing Mexican songs, wearing a sombrero and kissing the Mexican flag. Fans on social media are calling it a shameless move to secure a multi-million dollar payday against Canelo in September.
This looks bad because Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) was promoted to the WBA's No. 1 mandatory at 168 without fighting anyone talented.
Fans believe that if David Benavidez could not fight Canelo, then Berlanga will not be able to do it, because he has done much less in his career.

Berlanga's former promoters at Top Rank put him against weak opposition, allowing him to knock out his first 16 opponents in the first round. He struggled when he was pushed against top level opponents and his knockouts dried up.
Berlanga then left Top Rank and signed with Eddie Hearn, who made it clear from the jump that he wanted to fight him against Canelo as soon as possible.
Berlanga has fought two times under the Matchroom banner, beating Jason Quigley and Padraig McCrory, and is now pushing for a fight with Canelo after being ranked number one by the WBA.
Berlanga ignores Caleb Plant
“1000%. Puerto Rico vs. Mexico is the biggest fight this year,” Edgar Berlanga told LockedNLoaded when asked if he wants to fight Canelo Alvarez next. “I'm not worried about him (Caleb Plant). Right now we're trying to make the biggest fight of the year.”
“Edgar Berlanga is a talented fighter, but he got to number one in the (WBA) rankings without defeating the former world champion in a single 50-50 prospect fight. He’s just here. Some people don't trust him because they don't want to get beaten before he gets a big payday,” trainer Stephen Edwards told MillCity Boxing about Edgar Berlanga, who is actively fighting to become Canelo's next opponent. . Expert calls Berlanga
“He beat DAZN and didn’t fight the Diego Pacheco guy. When he was at Top Rank, he didn’t fight Jesse Hart,” Edwards said of promoter Eddie Hearn, who has not compared Berlanga to his fighter Diego Pacheco, even though they are both with Matchroom.
Hearn has paired Berlanga with weaker fighters Quigley and Padraig McCrory in what some fans believe is a calculated move to ensure he gets a big payday against Canelo. “I think his management did a good job with him, but I look at what they did with him.
“I see that they haven't set it up in a way to try to develop it. They create it where they try to make it pay (read: cash out). If I think a fighter can't beat certain fighters, I'm going to take it against them too.”
