Kambosos accepts the role of an outsider before the fight with Lomachenko – Boxing News 24

George Kambosos Jr says he enjoys being the underdog when no one believes in him against Vasyl Lomachenko this Saturday night in Perth, Australia.

Kambosos (21-2, 10 KOs) seems a little overconfident because this is a fight where he can't afford to be reckless. Sometimes the doubters are right.

The chances are not very good

In fact, it is not good for Kambosos that fans and bookmakers consider him an underdog. They think he's in over his head and the reason for that is because he's been looking good lately.

He faces a lot of pressure and has been struggling lately, struggling at home but no longer in select spots around the country like Cindy and Melbourne. Is this the best Kambosos could get after two losses to Haney?

Would Kambosos be headlining stadiums in these two popular cities if he was still unbeaten? It's hard not to see it that way.

Perth may be a huge step down for Kambosos from where he headlined after his upset win over Teofimo Lopez, so he needs this win on Saturday. I'm just wondering where Kambosos will fight next if he loses on Saturday. Could Alice Springs be next?

There's too much at stake. Kambosos and Lomachenko (17-3, 11 KOs) will fight for the vacant IBF lightweight title on ESPN and ESPN+ at the RAC Arena.

The winner of this fight could potentially face one of the other champions in the unification. Ideally, it would be Gervonta Davis, but maybe that's too much to hope for.

Prosperity in Doubt

“I like being an outsider. I love putting on a big mega fight in Australia that the whole world and the whole country is talking about. I like that underdog mentality,” George Kambosos Jr. said on Sean Zittel’s YouTube channel.

“This mentality has lit the fuse where they say, 'This is the end of Kambosos.' It will be an easy fight for Lomachenko.” If they think it's going to be an easy fight, no problem. We'll see on May 12.”

Kambosos may have to employ brutal tactics like the ones Devin Haney used against him if he wants to win. Lomachenko is too good for him and he's going to take him to school unless he throws out the rule book and becomes primitive.

“Lomachenko is extremely talented, he has boxing legs and a boxing brain,” Kambosos said. “It requires more. I have my own attributes. I have my own speed, my own explosive power, but I have a damn heart. I have the will and motivation to do whatever happens in battle.”

Kambosos is not a very good striker, so he shouldn't be counted on to stop Lomachenko because he's more of a simple skill level guy.

“I’m ready for anything,” Kambosos said. “I'm excited. I hope he's in better shape now. I hope there are no excuses on his part and all that matters to me is winning. I'm a real warrior at heart. I'm here for a real fight.”

Here it is. Kambosos is going to do whatever it takes to win, which is a hint that he may be planning on beating Lomachenko to increase his chances of getting the W.

A history of deceiving expectations

“In my career, I have always been an outsider. This is what makes me succeed. I have this mentality. I am extremely focused, I have fire, desire and the will to win,” Kambosos said.

Well, the only time Kambosos exceeded expectations was when he beat Teofimo, but that was a special occasion because Theo was injured.
