Sweeney's interest in the project stems at least in part from her passion for combat sports, having trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu as a child. She has also competed in many major UFC events, becoming an avid MMA fan.

“I wrestled and kickedboxed from the age of 12 to 19,” Sweeney told Deadline when announcing the project. “I couldn’t wait to get back in the ring, train and transform my body. Christy's story is not an easy one, it requires physical and emotional effort, and she has to carry a lot of weight. But I like to challenge myself.

“Christy Martin not only legitimized women's boxing, she overcame gender stereotypes and fought emotional, physical and financial abuse. I love the world of martial arts. The biopic does not yet have a title, but Sweeney is expected to begin production on the film later this year, with the project filming in the US. Sweeney appeared to tease her upcoming transformation as Martin after debuting some brunette locks while performing at the Met Gala in the US.
