Sydney Sweeney enters the ring.
Famous actress, best known for her roles in the HBO series. Euphoria as well as the recent popular film Anyone but youhas signed on to play boxing legend Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic. David Michaud, who has worked on films such as Animal kingdom And Kingis set to direct the project, with Black Bear producing the film after previously supporting Sweeney's passion project with a horror film. A member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, Martin is widely considered one of the pioneers of women's boxing. She was the first woman to sign with iconic promoter Don King, as well as the first female boxer to appear on the cover of the magazine. Sports Illustrated.
In 2010, Martin made headlines again after her husband tried to kill her in a violent argument during which she was stabbed multiple times and shot in the torso but survived. Her husband was arrested and later convicted of attempted second-degree murder. He remains in prison after being sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Sweeney's interest in the project stems at least in part from her passion for combat sports, having trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu as a child. She has also competed in many major UFC events, becoming an avid MMA fan.
“I wrestled and kickedboxed from the age of 12 to 19,” Sweeney told Deadline when announcing the project. “I couldn’t wait to get back in the ring, train and transform my body. Christy's story is not an easy one, it requires physical and emotional effort, and she has to carry a lot of weight. But I like to challenge myself.
“Christy Martin not only legitimized women's boxing, she overcame gender stereotypes and fought emotional, physical and financial abuse. I love the world of martial arts. Christy's story sheds light on her incredible rise to the top and reveals the struggle for fame behind the scenes. I feel compelled to tell the story of a woman who faced so many adversities and did not let them defeat her. It's powerful and emotional.”
The biopic does not yet have a title, but Sweeney is expected to begin production on the film later this year, with the project filming in the US. Sweeney appeared to tease her upcoming transformation as Martin after debuting some brunette locks while performing at the Met Gala in the US. Monday, which famously matched Martin's hair throughout much of her boxing career.
