The key to beating Crawford is against Saudi Arabia. Boots Ennis Mega-Fight, Hearn Says – Latest Boxing News

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn believes His Excellency Turki Alalshih can make a fight between Terence Crawford and Jaron “Boots” Ennis a reality.

Hearn says Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) will need a lot of money because it's risky for him to fight the undefeated Boots Ennis (31-0, 28 KOs), but that's where the Saudis come in.

Before Boots Ennis can get that fight, he will need to create demand from the boxing public by first becoming the undisputed welterweight champion.

Hearn believes fellow champions Eimantis Stanionis and Mario Barrios will want to fight Boots Ennis because he is the biggest fighter in the 147-pound division right now.

Crawford's price tag

“The only person who can make this fight is His Excellency (Turki Alalshih),” promoter Eddie Hearn told Fight Hub TV about the fight between Terence Crawford and Jaron “Boots” Ennis.

“Crawford will want a huge amount of money for this fight because of the risk. I will also make sure Boots gets the right price. When I took Jaron to meet His Excellency in New York, he made it very clear that this was a fight that he was very interested in.”

Crawford likely won't agree to fight Boots Ennis until he gets an expensive fight against undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez in December or January.

If Crawford wins this fight, there will likely be a rematch and he may decide to stay at that weight class rather than move back to 154 pounds where a fight between him and Boots Ennis could take place.

Ennis' path to superstardom

“I think this is good news for Boots and I hear the argument: 'Why would you sign them when they don't have a division like that?' There are no superstars at 147 pounds like other champions. So you have Stanionis and Mario Barrios,” Hearn said.

Stanionis and Barrios will agree to fight Boots if the price is right, but otherwise they will likely be cautious about retaining their titles. Both guys have looked very average in their recent fights, showing a lack of power and underwhelming with the weak opponents they've faced. Boots Ennis would make the job easier for these fighters.

“In fact, instead of us chasing them, they're looking at the Boots fight as a money fight, like you would have done before if it was Crawford or Spence or guys like that. I don’t see Stanionis or Barrios succeeding without Boots Ennis,” Hearn said.

“So, I'm hoping that after (Cody) Crowley we can team up against one of those two and then move on to the Terence Crawford fight. I don't want to sell my guy (Boots Ennis) short, but we have to prove it; we have to make this fight (against Crawford) big.

Saudi factor

“We need to go out there and fill Wells Fargo and destroy Crowley and then have people go, 'Oh my God, Crawford vs. Ennis is the biggest fight in boxing.' His Excellency reads everything and is also a big boxing fan. So if he starts to feel what all the fans feel, we'll understand,” Hearn said.

Cody Crowley destroying Boots Ennis will not create demand for a fight with Crawford. He's too low level to interest fans. Even a win over Barrios and Stanionis won't do much for Ennis. He may need guys like Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia, Tim Tszyu, Erickson Labins and Sebastian Fundora to generate much interest in Boots' career.
