Errol Spence Jr. is preparing for a comeback – Boxing News 24

Errol Spence Jr. is back in training for the fight, hopefully. Former IBF/WBC/WBO welterweight champion Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) hasn't fought since his ninth-round knockout loss to Terence Crawford last July and needs to get back into action.

Spence form evaluation

In Spence's short training video, he looks to be in good shape with some weight to lose and some speed to go. He looked a little slow in the clip and will need to be faster to compete against top-ten opponents at junior middleweight.

It would be a good idea for Spence to ease his way back into competition by first getting himself in the mood before facing one of the killers at 154 pounds. He's obviously too big to continue competing at 147 pounds, so he's going to make it big. to jump against a bigger, more powerful opponent than the guys he was used to fighting at welterweight.

Errol has been too inactive and has been through too much over the past five years for him to take on one of the talented fighters in the junior middleweight division. Aside from the loss to Crawford, from which Spence will return, he has had the following issues that have derailed his form since 2019:

  • Two car accidents: The 2019 car accident was Spence's worst as the accident left him ejected from his Ferrari and left him in poor condition.
  • Eye injuries: Retinal detachment and cataracts.
  • Weight gain: Spence let his weight get out of control between fights and turned his training camps into mini fat farms.
  • Inaction: Just two fights in the last three years.

Spence turned 34 last March and has only fought twice in the last three years, starting in 2021. With that kind of inactivity, two car crashes and a weight gain, it's no surprise that Crawford blew Spence out of the water in his mega-fight. .

Redemption or Fading Star?

Spence performed much worse than Crawford's two previous opponents, David Avanesyan and Shawn Porter, showing that he had lost the edge he once had due to actions outside the ring.

The version of Spence that we saw made Crawford look better than he actually is, and he may have fooled casual boxing fans who were unaware of Errol's problems outside the ring that left him as a damaged shell of the man he was. that he once was.
